TRAVEL: Preservation Hall

This photo was taken in New Orleans and is of the very famous Preservation Hall in the French Quarter. The history behind this place is pretty incredible starting in 1803 as a tavern, burned to the ground in a fire in 1816, rebuilt and became home to the photographer “Pop” Whitesell. Since 1960 it has spent its time as a Jazz house that is wildly popular with sold out shows every evening.

I took this shot in the late afternoon in the indirect, but bright light in May of this year. You can see from the photo that the outer wall is slightly worn which gave an amazing texture when I brought out the blacks in the photo. The building is purposely left looking as old as it is, and it is said that the current owner of the building refuses to clean the inside windows, and one look at them (not through them) will verify this.

It’s a wonderful place and experience to visit. I hope you get the chance some day…
