This is a photo of some pencils I keep at my desk. I also use this photograph as my computer’s wallpaper. I like this photo both for its content and the way it came about.
Using a computer all day, it is easy to love how it can speed up getting work done. I am not the first or last to bless and curse this acceleration that computers provide, particularly when doing design work. In many ways pencil & paper will never be surpassed. Having this photo as my computer wallpaper serves as a reminder that the classic tools are always there for me. Plus I simply like the idea of having my analog desktop on my digital desktop.
I took this photo in response to a @dailyshoot “assignment”. As a hobbyist photographer, I have not yet found a favored subject matter or technique. The focus that these daily photography inspirations provided were invaluable in trying to overcome the possibility of everything. Nothing serves creativity better than constraint. Focusing on the basics of this assignment kept me from over-thinking other details that did not matter. I do not know that I would have thought to take this photo otherwise.
This photo was taken with my Lumix DMC-LX3 — the best camera for the job because it was the one I had with me. It was shot in aperture priority mode at f/2.2. I did some color adjustments with Adobe Lightroom to account for that classic mix of fluorescent office light and window sunlight.
