About 2011

It’s a very simple idea: 25 days, with one or more photos each day. In the spirit of Christmas, we’ve asked our favorite photographers to each select a photo and share it with you.

Join us each day under the Photography Advent tree, as a new photographer recounts a photo from the moment it clicked…or didn’t! And along the way you’ll find a present of some photography tips, tricks, & tidbits to usher in the new year. Glædelig Jul!

Special thanks to Chris and Sean for creating PHP Advent—from which the idea was shamelessly stolen (with permission).

  2. 24th Dec: PEOPLE: Couple on Vespa by Doctor Popular Doctor Popular

I was expecting lots of photos of costumed fixie riders and nude cyclists. I mean, that’s pretty much exactly what you are surrounded by when riding in Critical Mass a couple days before Halloween, but only shooting with an iPhone … Continue reading

“Want to see something cool?” I wasn’t sure how to answer this question coming from two random guys approaching a friend and I at a bar on the Venice Beach boardwalk. However, after a long weekend celebrating the marriage of … Continue reading

  4. 22nd Dec: TRAVEL: Houhai in Beijing, China by Tim Erdmann Tim Erdmann

I’ve had an interest in Chinese culture for some time, so it was quite exciting when work informed me I needed to go to Beijing. I was born in New York, grew up outside of Boston, and now live in … Continue reading

  5. 21st Dec: PETS: Reflections of the Internal by Terry Chay Terry Chay

We appreciate photography and style by looking at the finished product without knowing or caring how the sausage gets made. The image above may seem striking. From a compositional standpoint, it has a classic and obvious “frame-within-a-frame” and violates the … Continue reading

  6. 20th Dec: PEOPLE: A Memorable Walk by Scott Cowlin Scott Cowlin

My 7-year-old is childhood personified. She is a bundle of energy and full of joy. When given any amount of free time her imagination runs wild and it’s a pleasure just to watch how passionately she lives each moment. Over … Continue reading

  7. 19th Dec: PLACES: A Mobile View of Transamerica Pyramid by Jessica Zollman Jessica Zollman

I’ve always been passionate about photography but I couldn’t afford professional DSLR equipment and, though I was attached to my SX-70 Polaroid camera, the death of Polaroid film brought about an expensive rush to buy quickly expiring film. I knew … Continue reading

I took this photo at a Halloween party with my Canon 50mm f/1.2 lens. The man pictured is my good friend Brian, sharply dressed as Alan Moore’s Rorschach. He was illuminated by candlelight and a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, which … Continue reading

  11. 15th Dec: PLACES: San Francisco at Dusk by Scott Schiller Scott Schiller

Sometimes, shooting at 12,800 ISO *is* an option. While I’m a fan of taking well-prepared, long-exposure night shots at super-low ISO whenever possible, sometimes a scene will present itself that just does not allow for any of those things. In … Continue reading

  12. 14th Dec: PEOPLE: The Modern Turkish Woman by Leslie Marshall Leslie Marshall

The photo of the woman under the Turkish flag was captured at Anadolu Kavagi, a small fishing village near the Black Sea. I took a ferry up the Bosphorus River, which separates Europe from Asia, and this particular port was … Continue reading

  16. 10th Dec: NATURE: Mt. Tamalpais Dreamscape by Della Huff Della Huff

There seemed to be a lid on San Francisco that Wednesday in December. The sky was a dull gray, and a near-constant light drizzle dampened the city. I had all but given up on finding an interesting image for sunset, … Continue reading

  17. 9th Dec: PEOPLE: My Favorite Outtake by Gene X Hwang Gene X Hwang

I really love photographing people. The power of the still image is that it can freeze a moment in time, and with people, there are so many fleeting emotions, thoughts and feelings that the camera is so good at capturing. … Continue reading

  18. 8th Dec: EVENT: Light Being by Ariana Cosmos Ariana Cosmos

Early one evening, I was driving along a suburban street in Venice Beach and came across a photoshoot with a clown on stilts – I only know one stiltwalker in the town of Venice, so I slowed my car to … Continue reading

I was in a boat at the time returning from taking pictures of whales, or at least that’s how I remember it. I can see from the actual image that the fisherman’s boat was on the shore. Funny, memory and … Continue reading
